Bowing to public pressure from businesses and residents located on Blanco Avenue, the governing body of Blanco voted unanimously to rescind the proposed street name change to Ron Houston Avenue at a special joint meeting of city council, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Blanco Historical Commission on February 24.

Saturday, February 27, 2010, was the official grand opening of the Blanco Pioneer Museum. It attracted a large crowd, who all enjoyed the exhibits, good food, good fellowship, and the entertainment. The lovely restored house at 418 Pecan Street was furnished as it would have been in the mid-1800s, with beautiful antique furniture and accessories, loaned by many for this exhibit.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet at the Old Blanco County Courthouse last Thursday evening. By all accounts, it was another successful celebration of the Blanco community, with over 120 in attendance. The dinner was catered by Sullivan Street Catering.
Blanco Chamber President Marcy Westcott provided a “State of the Chamber” overview and unveiled a few of the projects planned for the coming year.

Maureen “Mo” Augustine, a Winter Texan and breast-cancer survivor of 14 years, will teach four free dulcimer classes at the Hill Country Memorial Cancer Resource Center (CRC) this month.
The dulcimer is a three- or four-string lap instrument popularized in the American Appalachian region and known for the ease in which it is learned.

Blanco County, TX – In Spring 2009, someone abandoned two calico cats at a local business.
Calico cats are almost always females. Both of the cats had kittens—one litter had four, and the other six.
Since kittens are always cute, many people tried to catch them and take them home because they felt sorry for them.
Here’s where the story gets sad.

Counselors Jim Spruiell, Ph.D., and Pam Spruiell, Ph.D., will teach self-preservation during a free, four-week series for those who care for loved ones suffering from cancer or other debilitating diseases.
“Creating a life while being a caregiver” will be on Wednesdays from March 17 through April 17, from 2 to 4 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO Residents of Blanco are being invited to take part in a program being sponsored by the local Hermann Sons lodge and the Grand Lodge in San Antonio.
The program is called “Hugs from Home” and it was created for a very special group of people the men and women of the armed forces who are serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hill Country Cattle Women, who represent 14 counties in the Texas Hill Country, are meeting in Mason on March 16, at the River of Life Church, 217 E. College Street. We will begin with coffee and registration at 10:00 a.m. and the meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. There will be a program presented by Lance Rasch, Mason High School Agriculture Teacher, and student, Virginia Lemke, after which we will complete our planning for our 2010 Style Show and Luncheon to be held at the Inn of the Hills ...

Mark Kuebel was awarded the Arrow of Light Wednesday at the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet held at the Blanco United Methodist Church.
As part of his special ceremony, he was welcomed into the Blanco Troop by Eagle Scouts, Grant Weaver and Jonas Arnosky. The Arrow of Light award is the highest award available to a Cub Scout.
