On Saturday, April 5, City of Blanco citizens brought junk by the truckload to the city yard on Jones Ave. , while volunteers with an eye out for trash walked the roads and creekbeds and floated along the banks of the Blanco River.

The Blanco Cemetery has been certified as historic by the Texas Historical Commission and will now proudly display a medallion proclaiming the same. Everyone is invited to come to the cemetery on April 12 at 2PM for an event featuring music, as well as speeches by Jesse McCrocklin’s descendant John McCrocklin, Frances Alexander descendant Dorothy Dillon, and Charlie Haydon, who speak on William Blackwell’s Minute Men Rangers.

Historically, the town hall meeting was used to bring a community together to share information. The town hall format served several needs in a community that had limited means of communication. One was to discuss a public issue so that their leaders could make decisions that best reflected the wishes of the citizens; another was to allow locals a chance to meet candidates before casting their votes; a third might have been to inform local citizens about a new development that would influence their daily lives.

The weather was beautiful and the turnout was great. The Blanco Volunteer Fire Department raised approximately $23,000. 00, which came from mail outs and donations received at the fish fry.

The Blanco High School UIL Academic Team clinched the District 8-AA Championship on Saturday, March 29 in Comfort. Leading the way was senior Kirstin Weber with 60 points. Blanco scored a total of 445 sweepstakes points to outdistance second-place Mason by over 100 points.

As of Monday, 47 people had filed the necessary paperwork to run in this year’s election for five positions on the Pedernales Electric Cooperative board. PEC spokesman Michael Racis said that five people have filed for the District 6 Advisory Director position, which includes the cities of Blanco and Canyon Lake.

The Blanco County Master Gardeners’ Association will be holding a plant sale as part of the Johnson City Wildflower Festival on April 19 and 20. The plant sale booth will be set up in Memorial Park on Highway 290.

An ex-Blanco-ite, Kevin Hall, won 4th place in a massive poker tournament, which gives him bragging rights and many shekels! In the tournament, but not contenders, however, were Bob Daughdril and Cynthia Urban of Blanco.

AUSTIN - A number of citizens expressed alarm after viewing a video clip showing state representatives engaged in the practice of "ghost voting" during the 2007 session of the Legislature. Ghost voting is when a member casts an electronic vote for one or more colleagues who happen to be outside of the House chamber when a vote is called by the chair.

Ten youth from Trinity Lutheran Church, Blanco, traveled to Landa Park in New Braunfels for an afternoon of FUN! The group enjoyed the Landa Park train, miniature golf, paddle boating, and feeding the ducks.

Trinity Lutheran Church, Blanco, TX hosts a free concert with Christian Country Singer/Songwriter, Tommy Brandt, on Sunday, April 13th, at 6: 00 PM in the Fellowship Hall, located at the corner of 7th and Main Streets, in Blanco.

Obituaries

Roy Keith “Arkie” Byars was born to George E. Byars, Sr. and Josephine Bergmann Byars on November 20th of 1943 in the “Hospital In the Hills” in Blanco, Texas, which is known as the “Old Blanco County Courthouse”.

Dear Editor: I just finished reading my Blanco newspaper.

School

The San Antonio Livestock Exposition proved extremely successful for several local FFA members as the Blanco FFA was well represented in what has proven to be the largest livestock show in the world. In the junior breeding gilt show, Blanco FFA member Alisa Guler would place 5th and 6th with her Hampshire and Yorkshire gilts.

Blanco Middle School hosted a TAG+ Open House on Tuesday, April 1. TAG+ students presented a kaleidoscope of talent and creativity as they displayed their independent study projects.

Sports

The seventh grade girls took second place over all in the district meet on Thursday, April 3. In the field events Kelsey Schwind took first place in the shot put with a throw of 29’9 1/4” followed by Raini Romero who threw for 29’8” for second place and Mackenzie Johnson who took third place with a throw of 27’3”.

The JV girls finished third overall in the district track meet with a total of 102 points and the JV boys finished sixth overall with a total of 69 points at Junction on April 4 during the district track meet. The 4x100 meter boys’ relay team, Kyle Holmes, Corey Dowlearn, Jordan Handberry and Derrick Flores, took sixth place over all with a time of 49.

The Blanco Panther Softball team defeated the Comfort Deer 9-7 in their second district showdown. The Panthers are 3-2 in district play, which places the ladies in a solid third place.

Blanco loses 3-2 to Comfort The Panthers traveled to Comfort last week and came away with their first district loss.

The varsity track team traveled to Junction for the District 8 2A meet. The first, second and third places of each event will advance on to the Regionals.
