The Blanco Volunteer Fire Department invites the community to the Eleventh Annual Fish Fry Fundraiser. The event will be on Saturday, April 5, at the fire station, which is at 503 Pecan Street, from 4: 30 PM to 7:

The Dunis Family, which owns Blanco Star Antiques on the corner of 4th and Pecan, was asked by the city of San Antonio to contribe art for the Luminaria: Arts Night event. Susan and Val, son Miles, and daughter Zenia, are working on a shrine to the San Antonio River, which flows through the downtown area.

The Rainwater Harvesting Program held Saturday, March 8th drew such a large turn out that the supply of chairs in the PEC auditorium was completely exhausted and it was truly, “standing room only”! Todd Swift, Blanco County AgriLife Extension Agent, was event MC and began the session by introducing representatives from the many event co-sponsors.

Another 17 Blanco County residents spent their Saturday learning how to open and operate an emergency shelter to house their neighbors following a disaster. It was the second class in a year taught by the Hill Country Chapter of the American Red Cross, and hosted by the Blanco County Disaster Response Group.

On Saturday, April 5, at 8: 30 in the morning a group of dedicated citizens will meet at the Old Blanco Courthouse to clean the banks and riverbed of refuse. There is considerable trash along our River Bank and in the River which needs to be removed.

I was standing at the kitchen sink, explaining to my grand-daughter, that God rewards us with blessings that only He knows we want, only when we obey His commands, what He tells us to do in the bible. A flock of robins in our backyard was the first announcement of winter’s end and this morning a cardinal in a tree near our front door joined the celebration with a song. Soon numbers of these harbingers of spring will become part of the joyful refrain.

It seems like only yesterday that my friend Roy McQueen thought himself to be “middle-aged. ” Oh, he knows that life spans would need to reach three digits for this to be a literal truth.

Obituaries

August Richard Ludwig, 88, of Austin, passed away February 15, 2008. He was born in Hye, TX to Emil D. Ludwig and Erna Weirich Ludwig on July 23, 1919.

On March 3, 2008, Texas became a little smaller when Herbert Wallace Bowles went home to be with our Lord and Savior after losing a long term battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by members of his loving family. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 46 years, Jeri Bowles.

Jesus Emeterio Calzoncit Sr. , 68, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas. Jesus, known by most as Jesse, was born in Palau, Coahuila, Mexico on January 26, 1940.

Anita Joyce Winters Coleman, 75 of Johnson City, entered into eternal rest on March 8, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Joyce was born September 26, 1932 to Melvin C.

Dear Editor, The Blanco County News` lack of coverage of the crisis resulting from PEC Board`s illegal and wasteful actions is most disappointing. Despite extensive coverage by Austin and San Antonio dailies, the News offers no reporting about the reprehensible state of affairs of our electric cooperative.

To the Editor: I believe firmly in the power of people and trust individuals but I have always doubted government.

Six High School students received the “Texas Student Achievement Award” from the Texas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN 9Pre-ACT) Assessment. These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation. ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically - based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshmen experience.

As a part of "Education Go Get it Week", BHS is holding an incoming freshman orientation on Friday March 14th. Current 8th graders will visit the High School from 9-11am. During this orientation, incoming freshman will have an opportunity to visit with BHS Career and Technology teachers, view the facilities, and tour the organizations/athletics fair in the cafeteria.

The Blanco FFA has spent the last several weeks competing in livestock judging competitions around the state. This past weekend proved no different as local FFA members traveled to Brady and Austin to take part in contests. After results were given, Blanco once again proved competitive ranking high in several categories at both contests, while also bringing home numerous awards for their success.

COLLEGE STATION, March 4, 2008 – Texas A&M University has named its honor students for the fall 2007 semester, recognizing them for outstanding academic performance. The Dean's Honor Roll recognizes students taking at least 15 semester hours during the fall semester who have maintained a 3.

Sports

Blanco lost to Taylor 12-5. Ross McCormick took the loss on the mound.

The Blanco Middle School held a successful track meet on Friday March 7, 2008. In the seventh grade long jump, White broke the meet record with a jump of 17’2”, followed by Isenberg who jumped 14’8.

The Fredericksburg Billies softball team defeated the Panthers in four innings. The Panthers faced a hard hitting Billies team last Friday losing 15-0 in four innings.

The tennis teams loaded up the buses for their first set of matches as they traveled to Wimberley to face the Texans. Blanco did well over all, winning a grand total of 10 games out of a total of 22.

Regional News

On Monday afternoon in his Austin courtroom, District Court Judge John Dietz dictated into the record the essential terms of a settlement agreement in the class action law suit filed against the Pedernales Electric Cooperative, its board of directors and top management. Bill Ikard of Ikard Wynne LLP is co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the law suit.

DPS troopers in the Valley and South Texas will have extra officers on duty in March, looking for Spring Breakers who are speeding, driving drunk or not wearing safety belts. "The drinking age in Texas is 21.

The participating full time Blanco County Realtors toured properties in the south part of Blanco County on March 7. We viewed homes and walked on beautiful land that is for sale. Being local full time realtors, we can list and show you these and other properties at times that are convenient for you.
