It has been sixty-two days since Bulverde-Spring Branch EMS Director Mechelle Salmon stepped in to help the Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps with its reorganization. Last Wednesday night, the BVAC held a meeting which turned out to be a banner day for the Corps as they completed the corporate reorganization of the Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Organizers of the Wild Game Dinner are looking forward to serving a delicious variety of game to a large crowd this Saturday, Oct. 4th, at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year’s fare includes fried axis, red stag, black buck and other varieties of chili and tacos, gumbo, fried alligator, wild boar, fresh homemade sausage, bacon wrapped dove and quail, shrimp, possum balls, Melvin’s wild game stew, brisket, fried sweet potatoes and more. Doors open at 5:00 pm with serving and raffle starting at 5:30.

On Sunday, September 28, several Blanco citizens came together to discuss the need for the community to take a proactive stance against drugs in our town. Reports of juveniles using illegal substances and an increase in crimes, such as break-ins and vandalism, prompted the meeting. Across Texas, many small communities have come together in such groups to increase awareness of the problem of drugs and to send a message to those involved in illegal drug activity that it will not be tolerated any longer. The meeting on Sunday was held at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Located at the former newspaper office and before that, the post office, 310 Pecan Street is now the new home for Goin’ Postal. The Grand Opening was held on September 19, 2008 with many family and friends present. Owned and operated locally by Cody and Debbie Triesch, Goin’ Postal is a family affair.

Throughout the country, most children are starting a new academic year. Teachers are sending out their lists of required readings, and parents are beginning to gather books. In some cases, classics like “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “The Catcher in the Rye,” and “To Kill a Mocking Bird,” may not be included in curriculum or available in the school library due to challenges made by parents or administrators. Since 1990, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has recorded more than 7,800 book challenges, including 458 in 2003.

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center must collect 600 units of blood daily to adequately supply over 100 hospitals in 43 counties. New York, September, 2008-Guideposts magazine will conduct its 22nd Writer’s Workshop for aspiring writers the week of October 13-17 in New York City. Participants in the five-day workshop were selected by Guideposts editors from written submissions and samples of work. Each selected writer in effect “won” their place in the workshop and will attend with all expenses paid by Guideposts.

Residents of a children’s shelter in Galveston fled to the Hill Country before Hurricane Ike struck, but now they find themselves in a summer camp in Hays County with no idea when they’ll be able to return. Mary Orange, Vice President of The Children’s Center, said they are prepared to stay in the camp through Christmas and it looks like they may have to. The problem, of course, is that their facility on Galveston Island is too damaged to house the youngsters; Galveston Island itself is not yet a healthy place for children.

Summertime brings lightning bugs, pool parties, cookouts, fireworks, juicy slices of watermelon and many other pleasures. It’s also a great time to sell a home. In the area of God’s love, there seems to be three types of Christians: 1. Those that totally relate to God based on performance. 2. Those that know the scriptures on unconditional love and grace, but don’t relate to God based on that knowledge. 3. Those that know the Scriptures on love and grace, understand the finished work of Christ, and relate to God based on that knowledge.

Following the 10:00a.m. worship services on Sunday, September 25th, the Blanco Cowboy Church Family held their 3rd Annual Youth Playday at the Church Arena. Pastor Frank Spillman preached the Word with the Cowboy Praise Team of Ryon and Rene Krause ministering in song. After the worship service, Riley BBQ provided a delicious food concession on the Church grounds for the hungry cowgirls and cowboys.

An accident ahead had closed one lane of the expressway I was traveling and slowed traffic to a crawl. As far as I could see, the line of cars ahead of me snaked its way southward at a snail’s pace, entirely ignoring my fast approaching appointment. Common questions raced through my mind reminding me of past similar situations and resurrecting questions I had asked before: Why hadn’t I left earlier for this speaking responsibility?

Carolyn L. "Corky" Kincaid Williams Jones, age 66 of Blanco, TX died Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Corky was born November 1, 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a Baptist and a Recognized Photographer. Donald C. Warrington, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on September 13, 2008, in Live Oak Medical Center, Blanco, Texas. He was born August 30, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John Burwell Warrington and Sarah Isabel Warrington. Don’s education at Drexel Institute of Technology was interrupted by World War II. As a lifelong Quaker, Don registered as a conscientious objector (CO) and did alternative service with the Civilian Public Service (CPS).

Roy R. Rosa, age 99...and one-half, peacefully passed away in Johnson City, Texas, on Thursday evening, September 25, 2008. Roy was born in Sandy, Texas, on February 4, 1909, on the J.H. Rosa Ranch, established by his grandfather, J.H. Rosa, Sr. in the 1860’s. Roy was a true cowboy and rancher all his life and an excellent steward of the land and livestock long before environmental studies and regulations.

“Home is where the heart is and my heart is in Blanco” - Rueben Wyatt Cage Rueben Wyatt Cage, son of Rueben and Stella Cage, was born January 19, 1921 on Crabapple Creek in Blanco, Texas and passed away September 27, 2008 at the age of 87. A veteran of World War II, he attained the ranking of Major in th U.S.

Ruth Anna Hoffman Ford, 91, daughter of Rollo Hoffman and Ruth Marques Hoffman, was born February 28, 1917, at Whitefish, Flathead County, Montana. She told of the doctor traveling in 20 degrees below zero through a snow storm for the event. The family left Montana, due to her mother’s failing health, in a Model T Ford in the late 1920’s and arrived in San Antonio, Texas.

Socialized medicine is a term used primarily in the United States to refer to certain kinds of publicly-funded health care. Obama’s plan for solving healthcare problems is socialized medicine. Doctors and medical personnel work for the government. The hype surrounding socialzed medicine touts it as being great or as being awful.

Keep Blanco Beautiful (KBB) will be launching a CIGARETTE LITTER PREVENTION PROGRAM in Blanco, Texas, in October, 2008. The Blanco High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Chapter recently sent a team of officers to participate in a special opportunity—the chance to be part of the 2008 Youth Leadership Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, Texas. The officers traveled to Dallas after the Homecoming football game to participate in the annual event on Saturday, September 27, 2008.

Several Blanco FFA members spent this past weekend competing in one of the state’s largest prospect steer shows in Hondo at the annual Medina County Fair. Overall, more than 230 steers competed in this year’s show, representing sixteen different breeds of cattle. Senior Katie Baker and Junior Quaid Haack each brought home a reserve breed champion.

Blanco High School was the host setting for the Blanco Middle School Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 27. The tournament was for 7th and 8th grade 'A' teams from Johnson City, Lago Vista, Comfort, St. Mary's(Fredericksburg) and Blanco. Each team played two games against the remaining four teams and a tally of wins and losses were kept. In the end, the Blanco Middle School 7th grade team finished in first place with a total of six wins and only two losses.

The Panthers opened district play this past Friday hosting the 1 and 3 Randolph Ro-Hawks. Although Randolph came into the game with a losing record, the Ro-Hawks look to be contenders for a play-off spot in District 27-AA. However, Randolph will have to begin their quest for a shot at the post season this next week, as the Panthers scored early and often to cruise to a 42 to 13 win. Blanco opened the game scoring three times in the first quarter.

The BYFL JV Blue Panthers rattled the DS Tiger’s cage this past weekend. Although outweighed again by their opponents, the Panthers beat the odds. The Panthers struck first when Ryan Ronces returned the opening kickoff 65 yards for the touchdown, and also ran in the extra point putting the panthers up 7 to 0.

The BYFL Varsity team traveled to Marble Falls to face the undefeated Mustangs on Saturday. Blanco kicked off deep and pinned the Mustangs down at their own twenty, and held them defensively to three & out. Jake Breeding got the Panther offense going with an eight yard run, but on the ensuing play the Panthers fumbled in the backfield.

On September 27 and 28, the Tennis USPTA - Texas Division Championship was held at John Newcombes Tennis Ranch. Austin Carrola was undefeated. He won over Dallas, Houston, Abilene and Austin, Texas. Austin played with the San Antonio Team that came in first place; Dallas was second and Houston was third.
