“For while we were still help less, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” -Romans 5:6

One preacher said, “I have a very good friend who recently shared with me that on one occasion, out of sincere concern over sin and desire to be what God wanted her to be, she prayed, ‘God, show me the sin in my life. Show me what I really am.’ After a few days she said, ‘Lord, I’ve seen enough! Please, Lord, don’t show me anymore. I can’t stand myself!’”

Seeing sin as God sees it, especially as it is in our own personal lives, can indeed be a sobering experience. When sin truly comes into view there is a genuine feeling of helplessness. Most of us have been in situations where something needs to be done in order to make things better but we find ourselves totally helpless to bring about any needed improvement. This is the way it is in our relationship to God. Without His intervention on our behalf we are helpless. Other translations of helpless are, ‘powerless’, ‘weak’, or ‘without strength’.

Man is indeed in a helpless situation without the gift of Christ. What price can a man pay for his sins, much less the sins of the world? What solution will man conjure up for death and the grave? Despite marvelous improvements in a multitude of areas we still find that the base problems of families, countries and society at large is a sin problem.

Christ has opened the door that we were helpless to open. In Him we find forgiveness. Death and the grave are turned from subjects of despair into avenues of victory and hope. With Christ all things are possible! Helpless - yes, but hopeless - NEVER.
