Keep Blanco Beautiful (KBB) will be launching a CIGARETTE LITTER PREVENTION PROGRAM in Blanco, Texas, in October, 2008. The board of directors of Keep Blanco Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., is proud to announce that it has adopted the national Cigarette Litter Prevention Program for local use.
Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program was developed after identifying cigarette litter (cigarettes, packaging, and lighting material) as the most littered items found in cleanups around the country. Best practices in America and abroad were studied, field-testing was conducted in thirteen communities around the country and results confirmed the program will be a success in any size community.
Cigarette litter is definitely a growing problem for our community and we are encouraging community members, business and property owners to become involved and to engage their employees and customers. KBB volunteers have placed cigarette butt buckets around the square and the results have been very positive. The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program will be carried out through the members of the Blanco High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. FCCLA members will present a proclamation requesting support for the project to the City Council at the next scheduled meeting.
FCCLA members will conduct environmental and physical scans around the courthouse square which was chosen by the KBB Board of Directors to be the pilot area. FCCLA members are thrilled to have this opportunity to launch this national program in Blanco. The Blanco Cigarette Litter Prevention Program will support our community improvement efforts and give the business district in Blanco greater visibility. The program is set to launch in October and will begin with the environmental and physical scans.
