Quilting as an art form will be the focus of the Blanco Library during the month of September. The public is invited to a Brown Bag Luncheon on September 10th, which will also be the opening of the Storybook Quilt Project Exhibit. Paula Conley, president of the Wimberley Valley Quilt Guild, will introduce the exhibit of storybook-inspired quilts designed by guild members. Creating quilts for the children of the Hays-Caldwell County Women’s Shelter is an ongoing project of the guild. Last year 34 quilts were donated to the shelter, each with a children’s book to accompany it. According to member Bert Nickelson, this year’s quilts are “over the top” in creativity. “Members have really outdone themselves,” she says. A number of guild members will be in attendance to answer questions about their quilts.

Also at the Brown Bag Luncheon, a 20-minute video will be shown on the Gee’s Bend quilts, made by African-American women in the small community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The quilts have gained national attention for their strong design components as well as the stories of the crafts women who created them from everyday scenes of life. Jackie Hinton will present additional information about the Gee’s Bend quilts and answer questions. Bring a brown bag lunch. Beverages and dessert will be provided. The exhibit will run through the end of September.
