Signs warn of the dangers behind the fence at the City of Blanco Wastewater Treatment Plant, located off Sunset Ridge, but the ones that need the warning most can't read.

Bev Behrends lives nearby and says that she has pulled "at least twenty dogs out of there (tanks)." She said that she has also pulled out other small animals, and even rescued a small goat once. Most that she pulls out are ill but okay. The weekend of June 21 was a different and tragic story. One of Ms. Behrend's neighbors was dog sitting for a friend when that dog and their own went missing. They drove around looking, but were unable to find the two dogs.

The next morning, Ms. Behrends was made aware of the situation, and told them to look down at the wastewater treatment plant.

"Dogs are drawn to the water and the smell of the plant...when dogs come up missing, that is the first place I look", says Behrends.

When they got to the plant, the dogs were found. This time, however, the outcome was less than grim. One dog was left barely hanging on, and the other drowned before rescuers could get to him.

Behrends wants to get the word out so that something can be done.

The City of Blanco's Director of Public Works, Nathan Cantrell, said that crews were on site on Tuesday, June 24 to repair the fence. He said that "the City Council would have to decide what long term repairs would be made."
