Michael Clayton

Keith-

Finally getting around to some more of the Oscar-worthy movies, at least according to them, and Michael Clayton was one that made some rifts there. This is a smart lawyer-based thriller that really keeps you on your toes throughout. Attorney Michael Clayton is a fixer, the go-to guy when his powerful New York law firm wants a mess swept under the rug. But now he's handed a crisis that turns out to be once in a lifetime. The firm's top litigator in a $3-billion case has gone from advocate to repentant whistleblower, and the more Michael tries to undo the damage the more he's up against forces that put corporate survival over human life, including his own. The end is refreshing and induced a big "heck yes" from me for having an ending that was satisfying instead of leaving you wondering what happened or just not finishing a story. 3 paws

27 Dresses

Noel-

27 Dresses received a few bad reviews and I'm not really sure why; it's a very cute film but it is typical. There are no surprises. The ending is predictable but I really enjoyed it. The story gets better around the middle when Jane's (Katherine Heigl) sister announces that she is getting married to Jane's infatuation, her boss; as well as wearing her mother's wedding dress and getting married at the same place their parents were wed, so, in other words, taking everything Jane has ever wanted. Jane takes it all in stride up until her sister cuts up their mother's wedding dress in order to make her own. This is by far my most favorite part of the movie; in fact, I probably watched it about three or four times and I would rent it again just to watch that scene. I guess the best way to put it would be in Keith's words, it “induced a big heck yes.” I won't spoil any of it for you but, all in all, this was a cute chick flick. 3 paws.
