You may have seen bicyclists on the Hill Country roads and in town. It's a popular sport and the scenic byways of this region are a draw for many, even from across the United States.
Those bicyclists carrying packs full of supplies aren't local. The Adventure Cycling Association is one organization that brings people through Blanco. Their mission is to inspire people of all ages to travel by bicycle and they provide routes and maps on their website, adventurecycling.org.
Two couples recently met in Blanco as they cycled in opposing directions on the "Southern Tier" route, which is 3,159 miles long.
Barbara and Jesse Dayton, who live in the Lake Placid area, New York, started their journey in St. Augustine, Florida. and, after a stop in Blanco, were headed to Del Rio through Comfort and Kerrville. Carolyn Moulton and Nick Stowe started at the other end of the route, in San Diego, California. Their next stop was Austin as they headed eastward. They call Anacortes, Washington, home.
Be careful out on those country roads, drivers; more and more bicycles will be out there with you, from the casual riders to the serious, cross-country groups.
