Blanco Verde is hoping you will join us this February in learning how to be a better steward of the land. It’s wonderful we’ve gotten so much rain, and it’s time to start looking forward to a spring garden. But, a garden is only as good as its soil, and it turns out good soil helps the environment.

This month’s Eco Club is looking into composting. We meet February 10, 3:30-5:00pm, at the Blanco Library. We’re going to assemble a mini-compost pile and talk about what compost is and does. Compost, besides all its other benefits, captures carbon from the air, which lowers the effects of greenhouse gases. We can learn a lot from nature, and everyone is invited to come play in the dirt.

The book club is changing format this month to “movie night”. We’ll meet February 25, 6pm, at the Blanco Library to watch the film Fresh. The movie shows us how to feed a family on a small plot of land; and celebrates the farmers, business people, and thinkers across America, who are involved in the vision of how to feed the planet in the future.

March 6th we’re getting back on the bus to tour Bamberger Ranch near Johnson City. David Bamberger made it a point to buy one of the worst pieces of land in Blanco County. Now, due to many innovations in land management, his soil is healthy, streams are flowing, and wildlife flourishes. Our tour will be tailored to teach us how we can use those techniques.
