Blanco Verde, Blanco’s new environmental organization, is proud to present the first meeting of its book club. The club will meet the second Thursday of every month at Joyful Noise Coffee House, 520 Pecan. The first meeting is Thursday November 12 at 6:00pm. The book to be discussed is Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma. Dr. Charlie Tesar will lead the discussion. Dr. Tesar has lived on the Blanco River for seventeen years where he and his wife Marcia have an organic fruit orchard and farm. As an international development specialist, he spends time abroad advising foreign governments and donor organizations, such as the UN, the US Agency for International Development, and Care International, on social development practices. Charlie earned his doctorate from the University of Texas where he studied agricultural geography and commodities policies. He is committed to using pemaculture, a no-chemical, limited tilling, organic approach to agriculture, at his persimmon and apple orchard, as well as in his work in developing nations. His talk on Michael Pollan’s books will focus on implications of U.S. Government agricultural and nutrition policies at home and abroad, as well as the human costs and the impact of industrial, monoculture agricultural practices.

The date for December’s meeting is the 12th, same time and place. Please watch Blanco Verde’s website, www. blancoverde.org, for more information on topics. The January 14 meeting will discuss raising bees. There is no cost for the meetings, so come join us for these lively and informative discussions.

Blanco Verde is also joining with Heron’s Nest Farm to co-sponsor their upcoming Echinacea Harvest. Come out Saturday or Sunday, November 21 and 22 to gather your own roots, and take home the tincture you’ve learned to make. A Pot Luck for anyone interested in Blanco Verde is scheduled for 5:00pm on Sunday, November 22 at Heron’s Nest. We hope everyone will come out for this community gathering and be a part of growing Blanco Verde. Please call Maggie at 833-0245. She’ll be happy to give you details on all the above events.
