Kirchman Galleries in Johnson City, Texas are pleased to announce an exhibition of recent indoor and outdoor works by acclaimed San Antonio sculptor Danville Chadbourne. This exhibition is in conjunction with the grand opening celebration of their new Sculpture Garden, located behind the gallery at 213 N. Nugent Avenue, across from the Courthouse.

This inaugural exhibition will feature several large-scale outdoor works in ceramic, stone and concrete in the garden, a lovely park-like setting with oak, pecan and cypress trees lining a winding creek. Chadbourne’s works will be installed creek-side as well as inside the main gallery, featuring works in clay and wood, including both large and small-scale sculptures as well as wall reliefs.

Known for his craftsmanship and use of primal materials such as wood and clay, Chadbourne’s work is often likened to a body of cultural artifacts. The variety of materials employed, the use of both 2- and 3-dimensional formats and the range of both small and large-scale works creates a rich yet compellingly unified body of work. The ritual impact of these beautiful objects is made more complex by their provocative, poetic and often paradoxical titles.

Danville Chadbourne was born in Bryan, Texas in 1949. A resident of San Antonio since 1979, Chadbourne taught at the college level for 17 years until he devoted himself in 1989 to working full-time on his artwork. Chadbourne has been featured in over 60 one-person exhibitions in commercial galleries, museums, and other venues in the US and abroad. His works are included in many public and private collections across the nation. Chadbourne was featured in an article in the January 2006 issue of Ceramics Monthly, and is the subject of an article in the upcoming issue of Sculpture Magazine.

An extraordinarily prolific artist, Chadbourne was recently honored with a retrospective exhibition at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in San Antonio. This exhibition marked the first in a series of upcoming exhibitions featuring different bodies of the artist’s work, to be held in various locations around the state. This is his first exhibition with Kirchman Galleries.

Kirchman Galleries, which also have a second location at 305 Main Street (Highway 290 W) in Johnson City, represent many exceptional contemporary Texas artists. Their flexible spaces, which include three large gallery rooms, a courtyard and now a beautiful sculpture garden, offer an array of ever changing, thoughtful, visually compelling works of art.
