To be sure, the Blanco County Sesquicentennial is a great milestone in Blanco’s history, but not the only anniversary of note. Recently, the Blanco Woman’s Club (BWC) celebrated 70 years of achievement and contribution to our community. The club’s motto, “The Measure of a Life is its Service,” reminds its members that the club’s foremost purpose is to serve our community. When the club was founded in September, 1937, the ladies of the community felt the need of such an organization.. .and that they could accomplish a great deal.” *

The club organized a course of study that was divided into 7 fields of interest: Art, Music, Dance, Literature, Dramatic Arts, Nature and Gardening, and Civic Improvement. Their vision was to help not only themselves to grow, but to provide a better life for all of Blanco.

The BWC is recognized, most notably, for their dedication to establishing a public lending library in our beautiful town.

Today, because of these women’s tireless efforts, Blanco is enriched with a 6,320 square foot library with 30,000 books. Not content to “rest on their laurels,” the BWC has undertaken a project to build a new library across the street from the Blanco High School. This bigger and better facility will be a proud addition to Blanco.

The library project could arguably be enough for one civic organization to undertake, but the ladies do not stop there in an effort to bring culture and education to our community. The 7 fields of interest, or departments, are not only the basis for the Woman’s Club programming, each department rotates annually for a public event offered to our citizens.

You may recall the art show held last year by the BWC. This year the department of emphasis is Civic Improvement. The ladies deemed it valuable to the citizens of Blanco to learn about some of the important projects unfolding in our community and have thus organized a Town Hall Meeting. Representatives from 8 local organizations will speak briefly about their current goals and projects.

Participating organizations include: Blanco Library, Gem of the Hills Aquatic Project, Blanco State Park, The Second Mile Youth Recreation Center, Old Mission Revival School, Blanco Oral History Project, Blanco County Sesquicentennial Committee, Blanco Chamber of Commerce.

You will have an opportunity to learn about some important projects being planned in our community as well as find out how you can help these organizations achieve their goals.

All proud citizens of Blanco should plan to attend. The meeting will be held in the Old Blanco County Courthouse on April 17. Speakers will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the meeting concluding at 9:00.
