March came in like a Lion!!! The first two weeks of March changed planting schedules and cured the first attack of Spring Fever.

The first Bluebonnets bloomed the last week of February. The purple plum is loaded with blooms, the pear tree that I planted last year is blooming. The red buds are in bloom across the countryside and the peach trees in downtown Blanco are in full bloom. Spring is on its way, but things will be pushed back a couple of weeks.

Try to be patient and wait until Easter to plant your tomatoes. Peppers need warmer weather before being planted but warm weather flower seed can be planted now. Be prepared to cover the seedlings and transplant in case of a freeze.

Complete digging and dividing late summer and fall perennials.

Plant cool weather leafy and root veggies: onions, spinach, lettuce, carrots, turnips, potatoes and radishes.

Larkspur will be blooming this month. It is a wonderful flower to get started in your yard. It reseeds itself. It can be moved into different parts of your yard to start new flower beds.

Wait until you have mowed your lawn before fertilizing lawn and trees. Usually the last week of March of the first week of April. If you are using organic fertilizer you may feed any time of the year.

Prune spring flowering shrubs, vines and climbing roses after they have finished blooming.

Finish pruning or reshaping evergreen shrubs before new growth starts. Fertilize after they have been pruned.

Balled-burlapped and bare root plants should be pruned by 40-50% to compensate for root loss when dug. Fertilize these trees, and shrubs regularly with high-phosphorus (the middle number on sacks or bottles of fertilizer) plant food for the first year. Keep them damp.
