Dr. Marion Rathburn, 84, passed away Thursday, March 26, at his home in Kendalia, Texas. Dr. Rathburn was born to George and Lena Rathburn in Schertz, Texas on January 29, 1925. One of twelve children, he graduated from high school in Miranda City, Texas after which Dr. Rathburn served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He received his first degree from Texas A&I University before graduating from the University of Texas Dental School. After finishing at UT, he served as a Dental Officer at the Orange Naval Base then opened private practice also in Orange, Texas in 1955.

Dr. Rathburn was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he was Chairman of the Day School Board. His civic affiliations included the Rotary Club and the Orange County Community Action Association. Dr. Rathburn also volunteered for dental relief service in Guatemala and Israel. Following his retirement, he moved to Kendalia, Texas to enjoy gardening and was well known for his organically grown tomatoes. Dr. Rathburn is survived by his son Richard and wife Jody of Kendalia; daughter Elizabeth Miller and husband John with grandchildren Matthew, Merlyn, and Ruthie Miller all of Beaumont, Texas; former wife Sue Rathburn of Orange; brothers Lloyd, Gene, and Maurice Rathburn; and godson Rafael Ruiz. A memorial service was held at the family farm in Kendalia on April 4. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kendalia Volunteer Fire Department, Kendalia, Texas 78027.
